Andrew Purchas is Vice President of ACON, CO Founder of the Pride in Sport Index, Founder of the Sydney Convicts Rugby Club and Chairman of International Gay Rugby. He is a leading advocate for equality in sport.
Andrew has a long sporting background, having rowed and played rugby for NSW. He played first grade rugby for Sydney University and was award a University Blue from Sydney University for rowing. He is a life member of both Colleagues Rugby Club and Sydney Convicts Rugby Club.
The Sydney Convict Rugby Club was founded in 2004 and is Australia’s first gay rugby club and the most successful gay rugby club in the world. He was President of the Bingham Cup Sydney 2014, the gay rugby world cup and was instrumental in having the NRL, AFL, FFA, Cricket Australia, ARU sign the Anti Homophobia and Inclusion Framework for Australian Sport in April 2014. Bingham Cup Sydney also commissioned the largest international study into homophobia in sport, with 10,000 respondents across 6 countries. The Study was released in May 2015.
As a result of this work Andrew and the Bingham Cup were awarded The United Nations Golden World award for a campaign that advances social progress in 2015. And the Nick Farr Jones Spirit of Rugby Award in 2014 – awarded by the ARU
